I am a divorced mom with an elementary daughter and a middle school son. Our home is fun and a bit frantic most of the time. I cannot tell a lie.
There’s nothing I dread more than school day mornings where we can’t find what we need. One child would happily be late every day, but the other will engulf me in tears and declarations that her teacher will be so disappointed if she is but one minute late.
I envy those moms and dads who have those perfectly prepped and executed mornings. Is that for real or are they just made up stories?
My kids kept telling me that ‘at dad’s house we do 100 at night.’ Hmm, what is this thing that my ex is doing that the kids keep mentioning? Well, at dads, before bed they must have all morning needs – backpacks, water, lunch, snacks, uniform, shoes …. At 100% ready. Wow! Is this humanly possible? What a great dad!
So this single mom who packs too much in a day gives it a grand try. I’d like to say I nailed it, but who am I kidding? Every morning I inevitably cannot locate a paper-to-sign, forgot to put an ice pack in the freezer or can’t find my keys. Today my daughter hugged me as we hustled out the door (she in her brothers four sizes too big sweatshirt) and said, “mom, I love you because you are just you.” Hey, I’ll take that 100% love and appreciation any day.
